Today’s kindness
Required no favors
Required no friendship
Required no affection
Required no wealth
Required no fame
Just a bird
On a branch
Singing

A melodic cardinal
Resonant of red
Sings us awake
From pale bamboo
Outside the bedroom
Window flooded now
With morning light
Invites a memory
Of Japanese brush
Paintings in their
Delicate insistence
Of form and color
As we say yes
To this new day

Perhaps it’s best to look askance
At one’s self and all else
With equitable opportunism
In smooth respectful tones
Like a Shakespeare scholar
To recalcitrant MBAs who must
Take a liberal arts course before
They venture out to poach the world
Of anything to be sold or bartered
For fortune’s evanescent fame
Just ask Richard the Second
Just ask Richard the Third

Clouds strewn over the bay
As if a magician doing a trick
Lost control of his deck of cards
Scattered kings and queens
From horizon to horizon
After all bets were made

Comfortable in their skin
They move with certainty
Across the crowded room
Across the square
Across the meadow
Into the woods
Everyone a different pace
The narcissist and the neurotic
The manic and the moderate
The tall and the short
The stout and the slim
The old and the young
Comfortable in their skin
They move with certainty
