Poems

The Past

The past tainted with facts
And fictions it never knew
No witnesses to vouch
For this or for that
What did or didn't transpire
History's words twist and turn
For each generation's purpose
Ever elusive truth hides
Among rhetorical flourishes
Gestures half hidden
From rapt listeners
As tomorrow usurps today

souvenir

our Spain was long
country drives, castle tours,
house stays, late arrivals,
kid-friendly restaurants,
early nights, endless walks,
the occasional stop
for shopping, daily
visits to museums, universities,
and churches, churches, churches
(I had seen the agonized Christ
die a thousand times by the end of it).

we did not see dancing
nor did we hear flamenco
nor attend any bullfights.

on the wall
above our bed
we have framed
three postcards
bought at a market
in Barcelona: a watercolor bullfighter,
cape flared, brown as dust, flanked by two
watercolor flamenco dancers,
their moving skirts
rendered in splashes
of wine-red and pink, fading into
empty paper spaces
the color of bone.

Cottage Life

Palm fronds and butterflies
Flutter in the trade winds
Shadows look East
In late afternoon light
Across the grass sloping
To the blue rumbling waves
At the cottage overlooking the beach
Nothing in particular was accomplished

Dreams

All possible dreams
Wait in their own realm
They peek into the world
Ever hopeful of being chosen
Stories are read to children
Dreams wait for sleep
Tip toe into the room
The adventure begins

Flirt

My love works on math problems while I write poetry
She pays bills and fills out forms while I draw her nose
She does the weekly grocery shopping
And invites me along as her jester
Making my witty observations, playing with the food

My love flirts with the cashier
I fly into an impotent rage
The cashier is bewildered when
Smirks and giggles sneak out of our mouths

My love flirts with me as a stranger
For the benefit of onlookers whose own lives
Will be enriched by our play acting.
I'm the worst with pick up lines
But she comes home with me anyway
How do you like them apples?

My love feels safe with me
And i with her. In sharp contrast
To our earlier lives
When we were strangers who,
had we met at the grocery store,
Would not have flirted.
