Self Love

Unless you are Walt Whitman
Self love is an unpoetic affront
To requisite angular angst
Love’s labor lost and found
Diffident dads and morose moms
God’s predicted periodic absence
Melancholic miasmas mirror
Solicits servile solitude
A whirling dance of doubt
Perhaps Emily’s quirky grace
Of musical vowels and consonants
The only certainty in mystery
Allah waits to be discovered
Promises to take us back
Yahweh’s dutiful life after death
Forever lost in the glory of God
Buddha’s meditative moment
Requires you to forgive yourself

Wellness

In these doubtful days
What to do with all this wellness
As if working out were an answer
In muscle aches’ competition
Fraught with injured insecurity
That we are not worthy of
Marathon’s dead courier
Warriors without javelins
The gods and goddesses nap
Exhausted by mendacious men
Forever trying to silence women
In their truthful exuberance
The maternal battle with death
Kettle bells do not set you free
Until you fall in love with yourself
In that effortless instant
The winds will run with you
Against time’s trickery

Words

Words wait to be discovered
At the indistinct edges of each day
As time saunters toward dusk
So all of today’s words
Can get a good night’s sleep
After the back and forth banter
Of inconclusive expectations
Among emotional distances
As they rise and fall
As everyone comes and goes
As everything comes and goes
Twirls and whirls in fluttering light

Shakespeare’s Oregon

A descending sea of heads
Flows to the stage
Anticipates Shakespearean wonder
Righteousness dissected in
The foibles of love war politics
Tragedies’ inevitable misunderstanding
Often resolved by death’s dominion
Caesar’s many bloody daggers
Brutus’ single sword
No one left to claim truth
Elusive morality always
Strewn across linguistic frailty
Lexicographer’s shattered purpose
Celebrated in the standing ovation

Travelers

Dante condemned Ulysses to hell for his arrogance
Going beyond the known world’s boundaries
When he sailed to the edge of everything
Ever frustrated with our limitations
Rationality’s failures require leaps of faith
By scientist and theologian alike
We travel oceans and continents
In a search of our soul’s meaning
