Time holds us
In memory and expectation
The experienced present
Devolves into history
Evolves into the future
Forever indeterminate
Memory’s literary license
Expectation’s false dreams
Swirl the passing hours

Rain drops everywhere
Green fir trees pierce the gray clouds
Happy spring gardens

Democracy is a constant battle
To remain open to its virtues
Without being overwhelmed
By a plethora of flaws
Endlessly encapsulated
Continuous news cycles
Filled with excruciating
Uninformed ignorance
The mean spirited
All part of a constitutional chorus
Where everyone should be heard
Among America’s envied liberties
Democracy’s a fragile business
Discourse a monied thing
Manipulated by demagogues
In support of right or left
Forgetful of history’s lessons
That extremes end in disaster
For all but a limited few
Who say they preserve the peace
Chaos will follow their demise

To aromatic lilacs

People are very annoying
She said bitterly
To no one in particular
At the crowded waiting area
Where a flight would take her
To Kansas City to visit
Relatives she didn’t care for
