Ouroboros

Time again to wriggle from our old skins like snakes,
eyes milky with recycled promises:
newness, change, rebirth.

Hit the Reset button;
what was old is new again
just like that.

Can you blame us? After all,
our path around the sun, our tidy spinning days,
are circles.

Confetti and the shiny ball go down;
champagne bubbles and glasses rise
to greet the new year.

So we slither into position,
circle up the wagons,
eat our tails once more.

Just starting a pome can be helpful. I took notes for this one on the 1st, but set it aside as it seemed to be missing something. On reviewing them, one of my favorite images— Ouroboros—came out of the first image in the poem, and there she be.

I like. New year's feels more and more like deja vu every year. Didn't we just do this? Didn't we just hope these same hopes and make these same resolutions last year?
