The full moon this morning
Was large in front of me
Once the clouds parted
Framed in the windshield
Of my northbound Honda
Perhaps not the sturdiest of spaceships
But very fuel efficient
For a few moments,
I was an astronaut
Steering a direct course to the lunar surface
At 70 miles an hour
It would take me 142 days to arrive
Longer if I take the Ferndale exit.

Man in the moon
So here I am on the moon
having driven in my Honda
(it was a bit farther than I thought
because the moon kept moving
which I hadn't planned for)
but I'm pleased to report that
even with no billboards to watch
the drive wasn't as boring
as I thought it'd be;
I had my iPod and I'd put together
a nice playlist for the drive:
Dark Side of the Moon
Moonlight Sonata
Bad Moon Rising
Clair de lune
and a few hundred others
but sometimes it was enough
just to watch the stars
and I'd brought my telescope with me
so I could peek at a few nebulae
and wow Jupiter looks cool
when you're above the atmosphere!
So I made it without much trouble
though I wish I'd brought more
peanut butter-covered pretzels
seems like I can never get enough of them
and my beach chair is plenty comfy
though you gotta wear like SPF a million
and some serious glare-reducing shades
but see the thing is
now I'm the Man in the Moon
and I know everybody's looking at me
(though they never did before)
and that's cool
but it's godawful quiet here
and in a couple weeks
the sun will go down
and I miss you.

I think I'll go along
for the ride ... just fold up and put myself into the glovebox ... but only if you'll put Moondance on that playlist to go along with the others ...
